Iron is the Way
A meditation on Strength
Thought
Growing up, I idolized Arnold Schwarzenegger. His physique seemed impossible to my young mind and he always played the biggest, coolest badasses.
He exerted a strong influence on me and I owe much of my dedication to physical fitness to his example.
It wasn’t until I was much older that I discovered how remarkable his accomplishments truly are. He came of age in the aftermath of World War 2, his father was a Nazi and his family was dirt poor. From these humble beginnings, he set out to conquer the world. Today the man is 75, and here are just a few highlights from his impressive career, Arnold:
Became the greatest bodybuilder of his generation
Popularized weightlifting across the globe
Became a successful businessman
Became the #1 movie star in the world
Became the Governor of California (when that state was still impressive)
Amassed a fortune of nearly half a billion dollars
Is perhaps one of the greatest motivational speakers on the planet
Is funny as hell
The man is the fucking Terminator for Christ’s sake!
The secret to his success?
Behind his physique was an even more powerful strength of will.
One of my favorite mindsets from Arnold is to never have a plan B. It will only ever weaken your resolve. Having a plan B is the same thing as telling yourself “I don’t think I can pull this off.”
As Arnold famously says, “I hate plan B.”
He is the ultimate example of a man going all in on himself and never looking back.
So, be like Arnold.
Develop a powerful vision for your life and go after it with Strength.
Tactic
The most quick and effective workout routine I’ve come across was designed by the Russian strength coach Pavel.
Pavel popularized kettlebells in the West and is an absolute animal. He dubbed this protocol Simple & Sinister.
The routine consists of a warm-up and 2 movements: the kettlebell swing and Turkish get-up.
If I am on the road or strapped for time, this is my go-to exercise.
