Get S*** Done

A meditation on Finishing

Thought

Have you ever bit off more than you could chew?

I have.

Life has a funny way of throwing everything plus the kitchen sink at you all at once.

Interpersonal turmoil. Financial stressors. Looming deadlines.

For whatever reason, God doesn’t like to space these things out too much.

It can be overwhelming and overwhelm often leads to paralysis.

You may even ask yourself, “Can I just crawl under this rock until it’s all over?”

You can’t. No one is going to do your life for you. You need to get organized and execute on the mission at hand.

One of the most valuable traits a person can develop is the ability to finish things.

Alexander Hamilton

Here’s how I prioritize tasks:

  1. Create a list of the 5-10 most import things you need to get done

  2. Start with the one you are dreading the most

  3. Next do the one that gets the most results for the least effort

  4. Repeat steps 2-4 and before you know it, voila, tasks complete

Crossing off all those items will create a rush of dopamine. You are handling shit, no task is too big, no challenge too difficult.

The craziest part of chewing more than you could chew is that the next time around, you can chew a little more than you could before.

Read that last sentence again to absorb it.

Congratulations. Your capacity to face and overcome the vicissitudes of life is upgraded.

You are on your way to becoming a Finisher.

Tactic

One of the strange facets of being a human is the ability to observe yourself.

For example, let’s imagine a scenario where you’re in a conversation and feeling nervous.

You can simultaneously hold the conversation and observe yourself and your nervousness within the interaction.

It’s almost like being in two places at once. You can use this to your advantage.

Become a student of yourself. Notice when you’re at your worst and at your best. Pay attention to what elicits negative and positive reactions out of you.

In essence, figure out why the hell you do the things you do.

Gain insight into your psychological blueprint and master yourself.

Self-knowledge is power.
